Narges Mohammadi Returned to Prison After Surgery for 'Bone Tumor in the Upper Leg'

Narges Mohammadi's lawyer, Mustafa Nili, announced that his client underwent surgery last week to remove a 'bone tumor in the upper leg and bone grafting.' On Saturday, November 26, he reported on X (formerly Twitter) that Ms. Mohammadi was returned to prison today, but due to the type of surgery and the location of the lesion, the doctor's opinion was that she requires 'three months of care in optimal conditions.' He stated that given Ms. Mohammadi's condition and the doctor's opinion, 'we have requested leave and suspension of the sentence from judicial authorities and are awaiting their decision.' Less than two weeks ago, Nili had announced that based on initial tests, Ms. Mohammadi is suspected of having cancer. He mentioned that examining this lesion and diagnosing the possible presence and type of cancer requires 'surgical biopsy' and 'should be done as soon as possible.' Ms. Mohammadi's family also reported last week that after nine weeks of neglect from Evin prison officials, she was finally transferred to a hospital in Tehran due to multiple physical issues but was then returned to prison again. According to Nili, besides the suspected cancerous lesion, Ms. Mohammadi suffers from several other health problems, including 'one of the main heart arteries that was stented after a heart attack in Qarchak prison,' 'progression of arthritis and disc diseases,' digestive issues, and 'masses in the right breast.' Narges Mohammadi, a human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner, 52 years old, has spent over ten years in prison over the past twenty years and has been sentenced to more than 36 years in total. The Iranian judiciary has also opened new cases against her during her imprisonment and issued new sentences. In the past two months, international human rights organizations have strongly criticized the lack of access to medical services for this Nobel Peace Prize winner, calling for her freedom and medical access.
