Narges Mohammadi Returns to Prison After Bone Tumor Surgery

Narges Mohammadi, a human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, was returned to prison yesterday after undergoing surgery to remove a bone tumor from her leg. Mostafa Nili, Mohammadi's lawyer, announced on his X account that the surgery involved tumor removal and bone grafting. He added, "Ms. Mohammadi's treating physician has emphasized that due to the type of surgery and the location of the lesion, she requires three months of care in optimal conditions." Nili also requested medical leave and a suspension of her sentence from judicial authorities and is awaiting their decision. Earlier, Nili reported on Sunday, November 4, about Mohammadi's health status based on her recent medical follow-ups during her transfer to the hospital, emphasizing that she "suffers from multiple illnesses." According to Nili, "one of the main arteries of Narges Mohammadi's heart," which "was stented in 2021 after a stroke in Qarchak prison, underwent angiography again due to issues with the main wall, and according to the doctor's recommendation, it is necessary to conduct another examination three months later." He also stated that an MRI of Mohammadi's neck and back "shows the progression of arthritis and disc diseases; however, since last year, the doctor has ordered 10 sessions of physiotherapy and chiropractic, which have not yet been approved for her transfer," and "the doctor has warned that delays in this matter will lead to irreparable consequences." Mohammadi's lawyer also mentioned that a gastroenterologist has prescribed new medications for her, and "Tietze syndrome was diagnosed in her chest area"; additionally, an ultrasound "of the masses in the right breast" showed no changes. According to Dadban, given Narges Mohammadi's physical condition, she qualifies for "non-execution of punishment" under Article 502 of the Criminal Procedure Code and should be legally released from prison. The continuation of her prison sentence comes at a time when she requires special medical care, and returning to prison could jeopardize her health. Narges Mohammadi, a human rights defender, has been repeatedly arrested and imprisoned by the authorities of the Islamic Republic due to her activities. Her current imprisonment began in November 2021 following her conviction in May of that year, with additional charges raised against her in December 2022 and October 2023. She is currently sentenced to 13 years and 9 months in prison and 154 lashes. Her charges include "propaganda against the regime" and "collusion and conspiracy against national security."
