Narges Mohammadi Sentenced to Imprisonment and Other Punishments for the Third Time While in Prison

Narges Mohammadi, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has been sentenced for the third time by the Islamic Revolutionary Court while imprisoned in Evin Prison. According to a report published on Monday, January 15, on Narges Mohammadi's Instagram page, the Islamic Revolutionary Court has sentenced this imprisoned human rights activist to '15 months in prison, two years of exile outside Tehran and neighboring provinces, two years of travel ban, two years of prohibition from membership in social-political groups, and two years of prohibition from using a smartphone.' In this case, she was accused of 'propaganda against the Islamic Republic' based on a complaint from the Ministry of Intelligence. Due to her refusal to attend a court session held on December 19 in Branch 26 of the Islamic Revolutionary Court, presided over by Iman Afshari, the ruling was issued in absentia. This human rights defender has emphasized her refusal to recognize the Islamic Revolutionary Court, calling it a 'slaughterhouse for the youth' of Iran. The text published on Narges Mohammadi's Instagram states: 'The ruling issued is not unlike a political statement against the accused and has repeatedly emphasized that she incites and encourages public opinion and individuals to chaos and turmoil, advancing a game in favor of the enemies of this land and disseminating any atmosphere against the government.' Furthermore, this report mentions that this is Narges Mohammadi's 'fifth conviction' since 2021, with 'three convictions' occurring due to her activities inside the prison. According to the rulings of the Islamic Republic courts, Narges Mohammadi has been sentenced to a total of '12 years and three months in prison, 154 lashes, four months of forced labor, and two years of travel ban and exile, along with social and political restrictions.' In recent days, Abram Paley, the Deputy Special Representative of the U.S. for Iran, has once again called for the release of Narges Mohammadi, the imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize winner and human rights activist. Narges Mohammadi has been repeatedly arrested and imprisoned by the judiciary of the Islamic Republic over the past two decades and continues to inform about the conditions of prisoners and position herself regarding news and events, even while imprisoned. Narges Mohammadi is the second Iranian woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, which was awarded 20 years ago in 2003 to Shirin Ebadi, a lawyer and human rights activist. Previously, Hossein Ahmadinia, a lawyer, told Voice of America that the international community knows that the sentences issued against Narges Mohammadi are not legal.
