Narges Mohammadi Transferred to Hospital 'After 9 Weeks of Delay'

Narges Mohammadi, a political prisoner held in Evin, was transferred to the hospital on Sunday 'after nearly 9 weeks of delay by officials for medical treatment.' Taghi Rahmani, Narges Mohammadi's husband, announced on social media platform X on Sunday, November 6, that '9 weeks of delay in treatment, alongside years of imprisonment and solitary confinement, have seriously harmed Narges's health, and she requires a long period of medical care.' Her husband also expressed gratitude to those who supported and stood up for the freedom of this political prisoner and raised awareness about her situation. Narges Mohammadi, a political prisoner in Evin and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, suffers from various health issues, including heart problems, a mass in her breast, and chronic back pain, and had previously been denied transfer to the hospital for angiography and other care due to prison officials' obstruction. The 'Freedom for Narges' coalition has called for her immediate and unconditional release and access to medical treatment. Narges Mohammadi, a human rights defender, has been repeatedly arrested and imprisoned by the authorities of the Islamic Republic due to her activism. Her current imprisonment began in November 2021 following her conviction in May of that year, with additional charges brought against her in January and October 2022, as well as January, June, and October 2023. She is now sentenced to 13 years and 9 months in prison and 154 lashes. Her charges include 'propaganda against the regime' and 'collusion and conspiracy against national security.' In recent days, several political and civil activists expressed deep concern about the health status of this political prisoner in a statement received by Voice of America, deeming her condition a precursor to her 'silent death.'
