Narges Mohammadi Warns She Will Go on Hunger Strike

Taghi Rahmani, the husband of Narges Mohammadi, has reported that Ms. Mohammadi has threatened to go on a hunger strike if she does not receive her "essential medications" in prison. Mr. Rahmani wrote on his Facebook page on Sunday, May 17, that his wife takes five types of medication, but these were confiscated upon her entry to prison, and two of them have not been provided to her. Narges Mohammadi is a human rights activist in Iran who was arrested at her home on Tuesday, May 4, and transferred to Evin Prison in Tehran. In a previous interview with Radio Farda, she stated that the charges against her include "collusion and conspiracy against national security," "propaganda against the regime," and founding the group "Legam," which advocates for the abolition of the death penalty. This human rights activist, who is a mother of two, suffers from various illnesses. Mohammad Nourizad, a writer and political activist critical of the Islamic Republic, reported that forensic medicine has officially stated that Narges Mohammadi cannot be in prison due to her illness. Taghi Rahmani also mentioned that his wife has met with her children for the second time and added that her condition is "worsening" and "has deteriorated in recent days." According to Mr. Rahmani, Narges Mohammadi has stated that "if her essential medications prescribed by a specialist doctor are not delivered, she will be forced to go on a hunger strike." Mr. Nourizad also reported on his Facebook page that he, along with Mohammad Maleki, Gohar Eshghi, and several other political and social activists, go daily to Evin Prison to demand Ms. Mohammadi's release. The imprisonment of this human rights activist has faced protests outside Iran, including in the European Parliament.
