Narges Mohammadi's Appeal to the General Assembly: Help Stop Human Rights Violations in Iran

Narges Mohammadi, a imprisoned human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, in a letter to the Secretary-General and members of the United Nations General Assembly, called for "immediate action to stop executions, free all political and ideological prisoners, halt the repression of women, and suppress independent civil institutions." In the letter published on the 'Narges Mohammadi Foundation' website, she noted that it has been "two years since the 'Women, Life, Freedom' movement has swept across Iran," stating: "This democratic movement has made its demands known through the slogan of women, life, and freedom, and cries out for democracy and equality." Ms. Mohammadi added in her letter: "The price of this collective uprising and solidarity of the people, like previous social movements, has been the ruthless suppression of the people, which continues unabated." She pointed out that "the world is witnessing the massacre, execution, imprisonment, and brutal repression of women in the streets, detention centers, and prisons," adding: "These days, we are worried and witnessing the issuance of death sentences for active women (Pakhshan Azizi and Sharifeh Mohammadi)." Pakhshan Azizi, a civil activist, and Sharifeh Mohammadi, a labor activist, have been sentenced to death by the Islamic Revolutionary Courts on charges of "rebellion." The issuance of these sentences has sparked a wave of criticism worldwide. The imprisoned human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate noted that representatives of the Islamic Republic are currently among the representatives of UN member states at the General Assembly meeting of this international body, urging them to "seriously and actively, not just in words and hints, make human rights a prerequisite for any negotiations at any level for the realization of democracy and peace in the Middle East and in Iran." She wrote: "Take urgent and decisive action to stop the widespread and brutal executions of defenseless prisoners, free all political and ideological prisoners, halt the systematic and targeted repression of women in Iran, criminalize gender apartheid, and stop the repression of independent civil institutions." A vacant chair for Narges Mohammadi at the International Congress of Pen Associations Coalition 'Freedom for Narges' called for global efforts for the immediate release of the Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Narges Mohammadi, on the second anniversary of Mahsa Amini's death, stated: "The foundation of the religious dictatorship of the Islamic Republic has been shaken."
