Narges Mohammadi's Reaction to the Killing of Mohammad Mir Mousavi: The Islamic Republic is a 'Regime Filled with Hatred, Oppression, and Discrimination'

Following the killing of Mohammad Mir Mousavi, a detained citizen in Gilan province, Narges Mohammadi, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, described this incident as 'systematic deadly torture in detention' and labeled the Islamic Republic as a 'regime filled with hatred, oppression, and discrimination.' In a statement published on her personal Instagram account on Sunday, September 2, she stated: 'What a foolish and shameless government that calls the killing of an innocent person under torture, 'exception' and the systematic deadly torture in detention as 'lack of control of emotions and anger of the officer' and 'excitement resulting from friction.' Ms. Mohammadi also added: 'The cruelty, heartlessness, and relentless oppression of the government creates an 'exceptional' spectacle for the history of humanity every day and mourns the human community. A spectacle in which the government has turned into a gamble of life and death for us humans. A gamble that will ultimately result in a great loss for the authoritarian religious government.' Referring to the executions of several detainees from the nationwide protests of 2022, she added: 'Is this the same government that executed a young protester of the 'Women, Life, Freedom' movement for placing a trash can in the middle of the street as a civil protest and now declares the catastrophic crime of its officers as lack of control of emotions and anger?' Narges Mohammadi described the Islamic Republic as a 'regime filled with hatred, oppression, and discrimination' that 'not only against its critics, protesters, and opponents but also against its own people; a regime that has turned its face away from law, justice, honor, and humanity.' This human rights defender also stated: 'What understanding does this government have of the agonizing suffering of the defenseless people under oppression? What does it understand about how hard people raise their children in conditions of poverty, inflation, unemployment, and a thousand and one untreated pains resulting from the government’s completely corrupt and discriminatory policies, so that they become a flourishing and hopeful youth for the future of their families, and how easily their precious lives are taken by the government’s officers in torture chambers, on gallows, or on the streets?' Mohammad Mir Mousavi, a 36-year-old Snap driver of a Peugeot 405 and a resident of Seyyed Mahalleh village, died in police custody. A video released showing his tortured body sparked widespread reactions on social media. According to one of his relatives, the police set his car on fire on the same day of his arrest. Furthermore, the newspaper Shargh reported on Saturday, September 1, that Mohammad Mir Mousavi was the son of Naib Mir Mousavi, the former head of the Langroud City Council, who was shot in the back by police. The newspaper noted that residents who gathered outside the 'Nasir Kiadeh' police station in Lahijan, where this citizen was detained, heard the sound of gunfire. Shargh quoted another resident of Nasir Kiadeh village as saying: 'During the conflict and fight that broke out, they tied Seyyed Mohammad to a tree and set his car on fire; of course, the car belonged to his father. Then they took him to the police station, where they tied him to a chair or a column and beat him with cables, iron rods, and batons, and as a result of these blows, he was killed.'
