NASA: Artemis 2 Mission May Be Delayed

Four astronauts who are set to wait another year for their journey around the Moon met their spacecraft for the first time. Meanwhile, the U.S. space agency, NASA, warned on Tuesday, August 8, that there may be further delays in carrying out the Artemis 2 mission. According to the Associated Press, the astronauts were impressed by the unfinished Orion capsule, which still had red tags reading 'Remove Before Flight' hanging from it. Christina Koch, one of the astronauts, told reporters, 'It's unparalleled... I got goosebumps seeing it.' NASA and the Canadian Space Agency announced the names of the four selected astronauts for the Artemis 2 mission last April, which includes Christina Koch, Reid Wiseman, and Victor Glover from NASA, and Jeremy Hansen from the Canadian Space Agency. NASA had previously stated that it intends to send these four on a journey around the Moon in late next year. However, inspections of the capsule's heat shield could further delay the first astronauts' trip to the Moon after more than half a century. The Associated Press reported that an uncrewed test flight around the Moon last year resulted in unexpected burning and charring and the loss of material from the heat shield beneath the capsule. The heat shield is necessary to protect the capsule from the intense heat generated during its re-entry into Earth's atmosphere. The next Artemis mission, Artemis 3, which aims to land on the Moon's surface, faces even more obstacles and may be postponed from late 2025 to 2026. The Starship rocket has so far had only one test flight, which exploded minutes after launch in April 2023. NASA is concerned whether Elon Musk's SpaceX can deliver everything on time. Until SpaceX conducts several orbital Starship flights, establishes a refueling depot around Earth, and completes astronaut suit tests for Moon landing, the U.S. space agency has no commitment to travel to the Moon's surface with the Starship spacecraft. Victor Glover, one of the astronauts, stated, 'It's clear we have a lot of work to do.' Despite such long-term concerns, the atmosphere inside the Neil Armstrong building, named after the first human to walk on the Moon, was very cheerful and lively on Tuesday. When the four astronauts were asked how it felt to be in such a sacred place, Reid Wiseman, the commander of the Artemis 2 crew, said that their journey around the Moon is not the end, but it is with the next landing on the Moon's surface that 'our dream will come true.' Jeremy Hansen, the Canadian astronaut, also referred to the Orion capsule, saying, 'This is real... This is not a dream.'
