Nasrallah: Senior Hezbollah Member Was an Israeli Spy

Hassan Nasrallah has confirmed recent media reports that a Hezbollah official had been an "Israeli spy" for several years, but he stated that there were inaccuracies in these reports that "should be corrected." In an interview with the Lebanese television network Al-Mayadeen aired on Thursday, January 26, he emphasized Hezbollah's "success" and "vigilance" in identifying and capturing this individual. Lebanese and Arab media had reported in recent weeks that the person who had commanded Hezbollah operations outside Lebanon for years and simultaneously headed Nasrallah's security detail had been working for the Israeli Mossad. Recent reports indicated that this "spy" was Mohammad Shorba, one of Nasrallah's closest aides. These reports claimed that Shorba had extensive working relationships with commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Iranian officials. According to these media reports, Shorba informed Israel about many of Hezbollah's operations aimed at bombings in embassies and other Jewish targets around the world, particularly in the Far East, preventing their execution or inflicting serious damage on these targets. The reports alleged that Shorba had served the Mossad during his missions in the Far East for several years, at least around eight years, continuing this covert intelligence collaboration. Based on these reports, Shorba had also recruited several other Hezbollah members to serve the Mossad, thereby giving Israel a strong team at the highest levels of Hezbollah. However, prior to Nasrallah's recent interview, Hezbollah had not officially acknowledged the existence of such espionage within its leadership ranks. In the interview, Nasrallah stated that this unpleasant issue, which "should not have happened," occurred, and Hezbollah has learned a lesson from it. Meanwhile, Nasrallah did not mention the name of this "spy" or the damages caused to Hezbollah. Israel has remained silent in response to these reports.
