Nasrin Javadi's Health Condition Worsens, Imprisoned Labor Activist

The Free Union of Iranian Workers reported on the deteriorating health condition of Nasrin Javadi, a member of this organization, in Evin Prison, stating that she is in poor condition due to lack of access to treatment and harsh prison conditions. The report emphasized that Ms. Javadi's hearing has severely declined, and the lengthy process of transferring her from prison to medical facilities has caused serious neurological problems for her. The Free Union of Iranian Workers also noted that Ms. Javadi's white blood cell count is very low, significantly weakening her immune system. The report indicated a worsening of Ms. Javadi's osteoporosis due to her body's inability to absorb calcium and the inadequate nutrition in prison. According to the Free Union of Iranian Workers, Ms. Javadi also suffers from a herniated disc, which has worsened due to lack of medical attention. The worsening of Ms. Javadi's physical condition comes despite the fact that prior to her imprisonment, doctors at a public hospital had issued a certificate stating her inability to endure imprisonment, which was not accepted. The report stated that her request for medical leave has been denied on the grounds that she has not served one-third of her sentence. Nasrin Khazari Javadi was arrested on May 1, 2019, during the International Workers' Day rally in front of the Iranian Parliament and was temporarily released from Qarchak Varamin Prison on June 8 after 29 days in detention upon posting bail. Ms. Javadi was sentenced by Judge Afshari in Branch 26 of the Islamic Revolutionary Court of Tehran to a total of 7 years in prison and 74 lashes on charges of conspiracy and collusion against national security, disturbing public order and comfort, and propaganda against the regime, a sentence that was upheld by the appeals court. She was transferred to Evin Prison on July 2 of the previous year to serve her 7-year sentence. She is a 66-year-old retired worker and a founding member of the Social Security Retirees' Workers' Council (Basta). The head of Evin Prison prevented the transfer of Reza Shahabi to the hospital due to not wearing prison clothes. Younes Azadbar, a labor activist in Gilan, was accused of 'moharebeh' (waging war against God). Two labor organizations condemned the 'brutal punishment' of lashes for 17 workers of the National Steel Group. Reyhaneh Ansari-Nejad, a labor activist, was summoned to serve her four-year prison sentence. Keyvan Mohtadi returned from solitary confinement to the general ward of Evin Prison. Several labor activists and teachers were arrested in various cities in Iran.
