Nasrin Shakeri Released on Bail

Nasrin Shakeri, the mother of Nika Shakeri, one of the victims of the 'Women, Life, Freedom' protests, has been temporarily released on a bail of five billion tomans. Atash Shakeri, Nasrin's sister, announced this news on Instagram on Saturday, December 1, stating that the court has sentenced her sister to 'one year in prison.' According to Ms. Shakeri, Nika's mother has also been sentenced to 'two years of travel ban,' 'two years of residency ban in Lorestan,' and 'two years of virtual activity ban.' Atash Shakeri concluded by writing that her sister's lawyer has appealed this ruling and requested a review. On the other hand, Aida Shakeri, Nika Shakeri's sister, confirmed the news of her mother's release on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, stating that Nasrin Shakeri has been sentenced to '15 months of actual imprisonment.' She reported that her mother was released from prison on Saturday afternoon 'with a three billion toman bail' after spending 41 days in solitary confinement without the right to visit or contact. Aida Shakeri explained that Nasrin Shakeri spent the last six days of this period in a public ward and then provided details about her mother's sentencing, mentioning that two court sessions were held for her. Nasrin Shakeri was arrested on October 17 of this year in Khorramabad and was later transferred to the central prison of Khorramabad. Ms. Shakeri's court sessions were held on November 10 and 17 in the Revolutionary Court of this city. Ali Omidi, her lawyer, previously stated that the charges against his client included 'insulting sacred beliefs and spreading falsehoods with the intent to disturb public opinion,' 'propaganda against the regime,' 'inciting people to war and killing,' and 'insulting Ali Khamenei and Ruhollah Khomeini.' Nika Shakeri was one of hundreds of protesters killed during the protests following the death of Mahsa Amini while in custody of the morality police in 2022, and government agencies forced her family to bury the body of this teenager in a remote village in Khorramabad, Lorestan. One of the latest instances of government pressure on the Shakeri family occurred last month during the second anniversary of Nika Shakeri's death, when they reported that government agents blocked access roads to the cemetery, preventing Nika's family from entering the cemetery and being present at her grave. Seventeen-year-old Nika Shakeri disappeared on the evening of September 20, 2022, during the first protests of 'Women, Life, Freedom' in Boulevard Keshavarz, Tehran, and after eight days, her body was handed over to her family. Iranian state media claimed that Nika jumped from a half-finished building and committed suicide, but Nasrin Shakeri, her mother, stated in a video message exclusively provided to Radio Farda about two weeks after the announcement of Nika's death that the forensic certificate indicated that the cause of her daughter's death was 'multiple blows from a hard object' to her head.
