National Front of Iran Calls for Free Elections; Kourosh Zaeim's Perspective

The National Front of Iran, one of the oldest political organizations in the country, has called for free elections in Iran. In its proposals to the leaders of the Islamic Republic, published in a statement, the National Front emphasizes that the freedom of political and ideological prisoners and the freedom of political parties and organizations are prerequisites for free elections. The statement specifies, 'The performance of the Islamic Republic over these forty years has been such that this government is now historically at risk of disintegration and collapse.' Kourosh Zaeim, a member of the National Front's central council in Tehran, stated in an interview with Radio Farda that this political organization has long been concerned about the developments occurring and the conditions the country faces. He adds that members of the National Front have repeatedly provided personal or group proposals and analyses that the Islamic Republic must respond to, offering solutions to escape a crisis that could be very dangerous. The National Front's statement lists the troubles and anomalies the country has faced over the years and notes that the Islamic Republic can free the country from deadlocks and an uncertain future by taking a few steps. The three main steps proposed at the end of the statement include the release of all political and ideological prisoners and avoidance of violence, the freedom of political parties and gatherings, and freedom of expression and the press, as well as holding free elections without interference from government institutions to establish a constituent assembly for drafting a new constitution and determining the future form of government in the country.
