Nazanin Zaghari: The country we once took pride in took away the golden days of our daughter's upbringing

Nazanin Zaghari Ratcliffe, an Iranian-British citizen imprisoned in Iran, wrote in a letter to her husband on the anniversary of her departure from Britain and travel to Iran: "The country we once took pride in took away the golden days of our daughter's upbringing from both of us." Nazanin Zaghari began this letter by stating: "It has been a year since we embraced and kissed each other in London, and I headed to Iran. Giso and I only packed for a two-week trip to spend Nowruz 1395 with my family in Tehran, a trip that had no return home." Nazanin Zaghari, who traveled to Iran for the Nowruz holidays, was arrested on April 15 of this year by the IRGC intelligence at Imam Khomeini Airport in Tehran while leaving Iran. Currently, Giso, Nazanin's two-year-old daughter, lives apart from her parents and with her maternal family. Ms. Zaghari has been sentenced to five years in prison on charges of "acting against national security." Nazanin Zaghari worked for the Thomson Reuters Foundation, a charity based in London that is completely independent of the Thomson Reuters news agency and Reuters. In another part of this letter, referring to the "most painful part of the story is that neither of us witnessed our daughter's growth, neither of us," she wrote: "Our Giso has grown and matured. She now understands well that her parents are not together, with her father in London and away from her, and her mother living in a visiting room where we have met each other all this time." Ms. Zaghari added: "The injustice embedded in these moments cannot be described in any words; how hard we have endured and how far apart we have been, but our love has deepened more than before." Ms. Joyce Anley, referred to in Iranian media as the "UK Deputy Foreign Secretary for Human Rights," criticized Iran's human rights record last week in a speech in the House of Lords, mentioning Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe's detention. In this context, Iran's strong reaction to the British official's remarks has been noted. Mohseni Eje'i stated: "Nazanin Zaghari's five-year prison sentence has been confirmed." Nazanin Zaghari's husband mentioned that many members of the IRGC were present at the retrial session of the case.
