Netanyahu Accuses IAEA of 'Submitting' to Iran

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday accused the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) of ineffective oversight of Iran's nuclear activities, adding that the agency is at risk of becoming politicized. According to Reuters, Netanyahu stated, "Iran continues to lie to the IAEA. The agency's submission to Iranian pressure is a black mark on its record." He further asserted, "If the agency becomes a political organization, its oversight activities in Iran and its reports on Iran's nuclear activities will become irrelevant." The agency has yet to respond to Netanyahu's comments. These unusual criticisms from Israel come just days after the release of a report by the UN-affiliated agency, which indicated that Iran had provided a satisfactory response regarding one of its nuclear sites where uranium traces were found. According to the agency's report, Iran has also reinstalled some monitoring equipment. A senior agency diplomat noted that the presence of uranium particles is due to a mine and laboratory previously managed by the Soviet Union at that location, and the agency has no further questions on this matter. However, Netanyahu, referring to the agency's explanation, said, "Iran's excuses... regarding the discovery of nuclear materials at prohibited sites are not only unreliable but also technically impossible." Nonetheless, the agency diplomat told Reuters that according to the agency's assessment, Iran had tested explosive materials related to nuclear weapons there decades ago. Following the US withdrawal from the JCPOA in 2018, the Islamic Republic has increased uranium enrichment. Israeli and Western officials say Iran could reach 90% enrichment, suitable for weaponization, within weeks. Netanyahu's remarks come as Jake Sullivan, the White House National Security Advisor, and several senior Israeli officials announced during a meeting at the White House last Thursday that they would continue discussions on enhancing coordination to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and addressing threats from the Islamic Republic and its proxy forces. The Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff stated that the Islamic Republic is only a few months away from producing nuclear weapons.
