Netanyahu Blames Iran for Hezbollah Attack on Israeli Military Convoy

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday, February 9, held Iran responsible for the deadly clashes that occurred on Wednesday at the Israel-Lebanon border. According to the Associated Press, these attacks were the most severe since the Hezbollah-Israel war in 2006. The clashes began on Wednesday when Hezbollah fired anti-tank missiles at an Israeli military convoy in the Shebaa area, resulting in the deaths of two Israeli soldiers and injuries to seven others. Israel responded with artillery fire against Hezbollah. In these attacks, a Spanish soldier serving with the United Nations peacekeeping forces in southern Lebanon was killed. On Thursday, the situation in the region was reported to be calm but still sensitive, with life in the village where the clashes occurred returning to normal. Meanwhile, Israeli forces remained on high alert, and Lebanon's state news agency reported that Israeli aircraft flew low over border villages. The Israeli Prime Minister stated, 'Iran is responsible for yesterday's Hezbollah attack against us. We will continue to defend ourselves against any kind of attack, whether near or far.' The Hezbollah group, which is supported by Iran, claimed that this attack was in retaliation for an Israeli airstrike against Hezbollah militants in border areas of Syria earlier this month, which killed six Hezbollah fighters and an Iranian Revolutionary Guard general. Iran and Hezbollah are allies of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the country's civil war. Netanyahu also referred to Iran's nuclear negotiations with six world powers, saying, 'This is the same Iran that is now trying to reach an agreement with the great powers, an agreement that will allow that country to produce nuclear weapons, and we are strongly opposed to this agreement.' The Associated Press added that this conflict has raised concerns about the possibility of a new war between the two sides and escalating tensions in neighboring areas. However, it seems that both Israel and Hezbollah are not seeking to escalate tensions. Israel's general elections are scheduled for March, and the Prime Minister is reluctant to engage in war close to the elections. Iran has always been one of the main allies of Bashar al-Assad during the Syrian civil war, supporting the regime with weapons, military advisors, and sending Hezbollah fighters. The Associated Press further noted that the tone of leaders from both sides indicates that the situation will not deteriorate. Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon stated on Thursday that the army is on alert and ready to 'respond to any confrontation.' He also warned of further clashes. Ya'alon mentioned that UN peacekeeping forces had informed Israel that violence would not escalate. He added, 'We have received a message through the peacekeeping forces that, as far as they know, the conflict has ended.' The violence on Wednesday was the most severe incident between Israel and Lebanon since 2006. The month-long war between the two sides began with Hezbollah's attack on an Israeli military vehicle in the border area, kidnapping and killing two Israeli soldiers. The month-long clashes resulted in the deaths of at least 1,200 Lebanese and 160 Israelis, as well as the destruction of the Shiite-dominated region of southern Lebanon and the devastation of the country's infrastructure. The Spanish ambassador to the United Nations on Thursday held Israel responsible for the death of the Spanish peacekeeper on Wednesday. UN peacekeeping forces visited the Spanish troops' base in the village of Abbasiyah, the site of the Spanish soldier's death.
