Netanyahu: Khamenei's Statements Leave No Illusions

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded to recent remarks by the leader of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Khamenei, who stated that 'there will be nothing called Israel in the coming years.' Netanyahu asserted, 'This will not happen; Israel is strong and will be stronger than ever.' The Israeli Prime Minister's office released his reaction, stating that Khamenei's words leave no 'illusions' for supporters of the nuclear agreement, as Iran 'considers America the Great Satan and seeks the destruction of the State of Israel.' Khamenei had earlier reacted to statements from Israeli officials who claimed 'we will be free from Iran's concerns for 25 years after the nuclear negotiations,' saying, 'Firstly, you will not see the next 25 years, and God willing, there will be nothing called the Zionist regime in 25 years. Secondly, during this time, the spirit of struggle and heroism will not give the Zionists a moment's peace.' Khamenei also reiterated that America 'does not hide its enmity' and that negotiations with the U.S. were only about the nuclear program. Netanyahu, on September 9, emphasized Israel's power and its increase, adding that Khamenei's recent statements once again show that 'all responsible countries must work together to prevent terrorism and violence from Iran, which I believe will increase following the nuclear agreement.' Netanyahu is one of the staunchest opponents of the current nuclear agreement between Iran and six world powers, and his supporters in the United States have launched various campaigns in recent weeks to prevent its approval in Congress. On the other hand, the U.S. President and government have repeatedly emphasized that this agreement prevents Iran from arming itself with nuclear weapons, and those who oppose it are opting for war instead. Iran claims its nuclear program only pursues peaceful goals. Netanyahu is currently in London and is scheduled to meet with British Prime Minister David Cameron on September 10. According to Netanyahu, their discussions will focus on Israel being 'the only real defender of Europe in the region against the spread of radical Islam.' He stated he is ready to cooperate with Europe to combat 'extremists' in the Middle East and North Africa, but this requires 'a change in approach.'
