Netanyahu on His Controversial Remarks: I Made a Mistake and Apologize

Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, on Sunday attacked the leaders of the country's intelligence agencies in a post published on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), claiming that they never warned him about the Palestinian group Hamas's plans to attack Israel, which resulted in the deaths of about 1,400 Israelis. According to Reuters, he later retracted these statements and apologized. Netanyahu's post, which was published at 1 AM local time on Sunday, caused significant political uproar and created a rift in Netanyahu's war cabinet. Netanyahu has sparked public outrage for not taking responsibility for the intelligence and operational failures regarding the Hamas attack. The brutal assault by Hamas on southern Israel has deeply hurt the sentiments of the people in the country. The United States, the European Union, and Japan have designated the Iran-backed militant group Hamas as a terrorist organization. Senior Israeli officials, from the heads of the army and the internal security service Shin Bet to his finance minister, have all admitted to failures, but Netanyahu has not done so. He has only stated that there will be time after the war to ask difficult questions, including about himself. An Israeli army spokesperson refrained from answering questions about Netanyahu's remarks during a daily briefing with reporters, stating, 'We are currently at war and focusing on the war.' Israeli officials say that the events leading up to the Hamas attack will be examined later, with current focus on the conflict. In the deleted post, Netanyahu stated, 'At no time and at no stage was the Prime Minister, Netanyahu, warned about Hamas's military objectives; on the contrary, the approximate assessment of all security officials, including the head of military intelligence and the head of Shin Bet, was that a sense of deterrence was felt and that there was an interest in an agreement.' In a second post on X, published about 10 hours later, Netanyahu wrote, 'I made a mistake' and added that these remarks should not have been made and 'I apologize for that.' He stated that he fully supports all heads of security branches. Current and former allies of Netanyahu, including Benny Gantz, the former defense minister who is now part of Netanyahu's war cabinet, criticized his initial remarks. Gantz stated that Netanyahu should retract his comments and let the matter go. Experts say one of Israel's objectives in the assault on Gaza is to completely eliminate Hamas's organizational presence in the region. Israeli artillery has targeted Iran-backed militants at the Syrian border. The Israeli army stated: 'We will do whatever is necessary; a meeting between Hamas representatives and Baqeri Kani in Moscow.'
