Netanyahu Warns Iran and Its Proxies: We Are Prepared for Aggressive and Defensive Scenarios

Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, stated in his weekly cabinet meeting on Sunday, August 5, that Israel is in a "multi-front war against the Iranian axis of evil." He emphasized, "We will strike each of [Iran's] arms with great force." Netanyahu added, "We are prepared for any scenario—whether aggressive or defensive." He warned Israel's "enemies": "We will respond and impose a heavy price for any aggressive action against us from any direction." In another part of his speech, Netanyahu reiterated his commitment to bringing back all hostages taken by Hamas during the terrorist attack on October 7 and stated that he is willing to show significant flexibility to achieve their freedom while considering Israel's security. Netanyahu mentioned that the Rafah border crossing and the Philadelphia corridor along the Gaza-Egypt border play a vital role in rearming Hamas, and the Israeli army will not leave this area against the wishes of this group supported by the Islamic Republic. Netanyahu's remarks come in the wake of the killing of Fawad Shukr, a military commander of Hezbollah, and Ismail Haniyeh, a senior member of Hamas, last week, which has significantly heightened regional tensions, leading many to believe that a direct confrontation between the Iranian government and Israel is very likely. According to Axios news site, Washington and Jerusalem officials expect the Islamic Republic and its proxy forces to retaliate for the killings of Fawad Shukr and Ismail Haniyeh by attacking Israel starting Tuesday. The Pentagon announced on Friday, August 3, that it is moving a squadron of fighter jets to the Middle East and maintaining an aircraft carrier in the region to bolster the U.S. military presence to help defend Israel and protect American forces. Israel and the U.S. are coordinating a regional and international coalition to deter potential attacks similar to the Islamic Republic's April 14 assault. Meanwhile, many countries around the world have urged their citizens to leave Lebanon, as well as Israel and Iran. Most international airlines have also canceled their flights to the region, especially to the aforementioned three countries. The U.S. and the U.K. have urged their citizens to leave Lebanon immediately. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed after a "major defeat" that Ismail Haniyeh was killed by a "short-range projectile." The increase in tensions in the Middle East and the cancellation of flights by several other airlines have been noted. The Islamic Republic's representation stated that Hezbollah may target Israeli civilians and military personnel in response to the killing of Fawad Shukr. The Pentagon announced a change in the U.S. military posture in the Middle East to defend Israel and reduce tensions. Yoav Galant stated that cooperation between the U.S. and Israel against the Islamic Republic and its proxies is "vital" for regional security. Poland has warned its citizens not to travel to "Iran, Israel, and Lebanon."
