Netanyahu: We Will Prevent the Islamic Republic from Acquiring Nuclear Weapons

Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, announced that his country will not overlook the threats posed by the Islamic Republic. In his speech to the Israeli parliament (Knesset) on Monday, December 24, he emphasized the increasing challenges facing Israel: 'We will not ignore [the government of] Iran, which has threatened us with destruction, and we are determined to prevent [the government of] Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and other weapons that threaten our homeland and cities.' Jake Sullivan, the U.S. National Security Advisor, stated on Sunday, December 23, that the U.S. is concerned that the weakening of the Islamic Republic due to recent developments in the region could lead to the construction of nuclear weapons by the Iranian government. This senior White House official warned of a 'real danger' regarding the desire of some within the Iranian government to develop nuclear weapons and change nuclear doctrine. Jake Sullivan emphasized that the U.S. is 'vigilant' regarding this threat and has consulted with Israel on the matter. Meanwhile, Benny Gantz, former Israeli Defense Minister, pointed to the attacks by Iranian proxy groups, including the Houthis, against Israel, stating that his country must 'directly target Iran.' Benny Gantz, leader of the 'National Unity' party in Israel, asserted that 'the solution to ending these attacks lies in Tehran.' He advised that regional countries and the U.S. should work with Israel to eliminate the 'threat of the Iranian nuclear regime.' Benjamin Netanyahu also announced his country's intention to expand the 'Abraham Accords' in cooperation with the U.S. The 'Abraham Accords,' initiated about four years ago through the efforts of then-President Donald Trump, led to the normalization of diplomatic relations between Israel and several Arab countries in the region, including the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Morocco. In another part of his speech to the Knesset, the Prime Minister referred to progress in negotiations regarding the release of hostages. During the terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7 last year, more than 1,200 people, mostly civilians, were killed, and over 250 others, including women, children, and the elderly, were taken hostage. Currently, about 100 hostages remain in captivity by Hamas in Gaza, and reports indicate that some of them have been killed. The U.S. and other mediators have intensified discussions in recent weeks for the release of hostages and establishing a ceasefire in Gaza.
