Netanyahu's Conditions for Peace in the Region: First, the Destruction of Hamas, Then the Demilitarization of Gaza

Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, outlined three prerequisites for peace in the region in a note referencing a broad peace outlook in the Middle East: "the destruction of Hamas," "the demilitarization of Gaza," and the initiation of a process to eradicate "fundamentalism within Palestinian society." According to The Hill, Netanyahu stated in this note published in The Wall Street Journal: "Once these three conditions are met, Gaza can be rebuilt, and the broad vision of peace in the Middle East will become a reality." Although Netanyahu has supported these conditions in the past, this time he clearly articulated his position in a major U.S. media outlet, effectively clarifying Israel's stance amid increasing international pressure to find a path to peace. The Israeli Prime Minister emphasized the need for the destruction of Hamas, noting that the leaders of this group are committed to repeating the brutal attack of October 7 time and again, adding: "That is why their destruction is the only appropriate response for prevention." While Netanyahu has committed to acting "in full compliance with international law" for the destruction of Hamas, he also pointed out the difficulties of doing so, as Hamas often uses Palestinian civilians as "human shields." In his note, Netanyahu emphasized that Israel is working to minimize civilian casualties and outlines ways to achieve this goal. Israel has faced serious international criticism for the types of bombs used in Gaza, with some believing that Israel could have done more to limit civilian casualties. At the end of this note, Netanyahu proposes the establishment of a "security zone" and border inspections, stating that eradication requires leadership changes and education, referencing the successes after World War II and the transformation of Germany and Japan. Families of hostages held by Hamas protested; Netanyahu emphasized the continuation of the war in Gaza. Hamas and Islamic Jihad opposed Egypt's proposal for a permanent ceasefire; Netanyahu stated that the war would be prolonged.
