Netanyahu's Renewed Request to UNIFIL: Leave the War Zone

As clashes intensify between the Israeli army and Hezbollah, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has once again asked UN peacekeeping forces (UNIFIL) to temporarily withdraw from the war zone. On Monday, October 15, Netanyahu described accusations of Israel's 'deliberate' attack on UNIFIL forces as 'completely false' and emphasized that Israel's war is with 'Hezbollah, the proxy force of [the Iranian] government,' which he claims attacks Israel using Lebanese territory. Netanyahu recalled Hezbollah's unprovoked attack on Israel just one day after the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7, 2023, stating that this Iran-backed group has since fired over 10,000 rockets and missiles at Israel. He added that Hezbollah uses UNIFIL facilities and positions as cover to attack Israeli cities and citizens, resulting in numerous Israeli casualties. While expressing regret over the injuries sustained by UNIFIL forces, Netanyahu insisted that the Israeli army will do everything in its power to prevent such incidents from recurring, but the best way to protect UNIFIL personnel is their temporary withdrawal from the war zone. On Sunday, following an Israeli tank attack on the entrance of a UN peacekeeping base in southern Lebanon, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that any attack on peacekeeping forces could be considered a 'war crime.' According to Reuters, Guterres's spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, stated, 'The Secretary-General reiterates that UNIFIL premises and personnel should never be targeted. Attacks against peacekeepers violate international law, including humanitarian law.' Amid Israeli attacks on Iranian-backed Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon in recent days, the UN peacekeeping headquarters in the area has been attacked twice, injuring several peacekeepers. Netanyahu expressed regret over the injuries to peacekeepers, stating that the Israeli army is making every effort to prevent such events from happening again, but 'the simple and clear way to ensure this is their withdrawal from the danger zone.' In a message to Antonio Guterres, Netanyahu said, 'Your refusal to evacuate UN peacekeeping forces [from combat areas] turns them into hostages of Hezbollah,' endangering the lives of both Israeli soldiers and these forces. Relations between the Israeli government and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres have soured in recent months due to his approach to the war between Israel and Iranian-backed militant groups in Gaza and Lebanon.
