Netanyahu's Warning to the Islamic Republic and Hezbollah: Don't Test Us in Northern Israel

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned the Islamic Republic of Iran and Hezbollah on Monday, October 16, not to 'test us' in northern Israel. This warning comes as the Israeli army is preparing for an imminent ground assault on Gaza and coincides with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken's second visit to Israel in a week during his Middle East tour. U.S. officials have warned that the war between Israel and Hamas may escalate following cross-border clashes between Israel and Hezbollah, which is supported by the Islamic Republic. On Monday, Israel announced that it would evacuate residents of 28 villages along the border with Lebanon after one of them was hit by a Hezbollah missile attack on Sunday, which reportedly killed a civilian. Hezbollah announced on the same day that it had destroyed Israeli surveillance cameras at five points along the border amid rising tensions following the Israel-Hamas war. According to the Associated Press, Hezbollah appears to be trying to prevent the Israeli army from monitoring border movements after several days of exchanges of fire that resulted in the deaths of at least seven of its fighters in Lebanon. Since the Hamas attack on October 7, which killed over 1,400 Israeli civilians and soldiers, tensions along the Lebanon-Israel border have increased. Hezbollah fighters targeted Israeli army positions with anti-tank missiles, and the Israeli army responded by shelling border areas on the Lebanese side. There are concerns that Hezbollah may join the war against Israel. U.S. President Joe Biden has warned the Islamic Republic to avoid escalating tensions and has deployed strike groups with American warships to the region, pledging full support for Israel. French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna arrived in Beirut to discuss border tensions with Lebanese officials. Interim Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati emphasized in phone calls with senior American officials and leaders from Britain, France, Turkey, Qatar, Jordan, and Italy that he would try to prevent Lebanon from being drawn into a new war with Israel. There are worries that Hezbollah may ignore the Lebanese government's concerns and escalate regional tensions if Israel conducts a ground invasion of Gaza. An Israeli army spokesperson threatened that if Hezbollah continues its attacks against Israel, it will face a 'deadly' response, adding that Hezbollah had conducted several attacks on Sunday under the guidance and support of the Islamic Republic to divert attention from Gaza. The representative of Pope Francis in Israel stated on Monday that he is willing to exchange himself for Israeli children taken hostage by Hamas and held in Gaza. Archbishop Pierbattista Pizzaballa, responding to a question during a video conference with journalists in Italy, said, 'I am ready to do whatever it takes to bring the children back home. I am fully prepared to exchange myself for them.' He also emphasized that he and his office have had no direct contact with Hamas. The head of the Israel Hotel Association stated on Monday that half of the hotel rooms in Israel are being used to accommodate families evacuated from areas near the Gaza Strip. Yael Danieli, the executive director of the association, said that Israel has 56,000 hotel rooms, with 28,000 allocated for this purpose. He also told a parliamentary committee that 27,000 people from border cities near Lebanon are expected to be housed in hotels. Danieli added that these citizens need food and other welfare assistance from the government. Since many commercial airlines suspended flights to Tel Aviv due to Hamas missile attacks, foreign tourism in Israel has significantly declined. The Israeli budget director stated that the government's initial goal was to finance military needs, but now all economic sectors will be covered.
