New Actions by House Democrats Regarding Iran and Russia Sanction Bill

Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives say they intend to reintroduce a bill for sanctions against Iran and Russia. The aim of this action is to overcome the 'obstacle' that has arisen in the House of Representatives and is described as a new effort to pursue congressional actions against the Russian government. Previously, the U.S. Senate had overwhelmingly passed a bill that included sanctions against Iran and an amendment targeting Russian companies and citizens. This bill also required the President to obtain congressional approval to reduce or end sanctions against Russia. Voting on the bill in the House of Representatives faced obstacles. Republican leaders in the House stated that a bill intended to become law in the executive branch and related to revenue, trade, and commerce must first be introduced in the House, not the Senate. Donald Trump's party members hold a majority in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, but this majority is significantly stronger in the House. Democrats have accused Republicans of intending to weaken the bill. On the other hand, the U.S. government claims that sanctions cannot restrict the decision-making rights of representatives and hinder the diplomatic process. Now, Reuters reports, citing aides to Democratic representatives, that they are introducing a new version to prevent the 'obstacle' in the House. However, the new bill reportedly differs little from the original Senate bill from June 15; this time, the initial decision-making is entrusted to the House. However, Ashley Strong, spokesperson for Paul Ryan, the Republican Speaker of the House, says that introducing a new bill will require another Senate vote, thus delaying the overall approval again. The new actions follow recent reports regarding the meeting between Trump’s son and a Russian lawyer, and the emails exchanged in this regard during last year’s presidential campaign. Last year, Trump’s son and several senior members of his campaign met with a Russian lawyer who claimed to have damaging information about Hillary Clinton's campaign. In the exchanged emails, a person named Rob Goldstone, known for lobbying, told Donald Trump Jr. that providing this information was part of Russia's support for Mr. Trump. Donald Trump Jr. responded, 'If it's what you say, I love it,' and subsequently met with the Russian lawyer. In an interview with Fox News, Donald Trump Jr. described the atmosphere as 'ridiculous' and 'exaggerated,' stating that his father had no knowledge of the meeting last year. Mr. Trump defended his son, saying his actions and the release of emails show that he acted 'transparently and is innocent.' The bill against Iran includes an attachment against Russia. Accusations of Russian interference in the U.S. elections have been among the most significant and controversial political issues in the United States in recent months. While the new sanctions bill is primarily focused on Russia, its initial target is Iran. The sanctions against Iran are mainly centered around its missile program, allegations of supporting Islamist militant groups, arms transfers, and human rights violations. Previously, John Kerry, Secretary of State during Barack Obama’s presidency, who led the nuclear negotiations with Iran, had warned about sanctions that could undermine the nuclear agreement. On the other hand, the current U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson welcomed the new Iran-related bill. However, Mr. Tillerson also criticized another part of it last month, stating that Mr. Trump needs to be flexible to meet the needs of a diplomatic process. In this context, the White House is seeking changes to the Iran and Russia sanctions bill.
