New Brazilian President Sworn In

Jair Bolsonaro was sworn in as the new President of Brazil on Tuesday, January 1. According to Reuters, Mr. Bolsonaro also promised to address issues such as corruption, crime, and mismanagement in the largest country in Latin America. In his remarks after the oath-taking ceremony, Jair Bolsonaro said: "This is the beginning of Brazil's freedom from socialism, political correctness, and big government." Jair Bolsonaro, the far-right candidate, managed to defeat his leftist opponent Fernando Haddad from the Workers' Party of Brazil in the second round of the presidential election held in November with a significant margin. While addressing thousands of his supporters, Bolsonaro emphasized the necessity of solving Brazil's challenges. The new President of Brazil, referring to the impact of the economic crisis on people's lives, stated: "We must quickly put an end to ideologies that support criminals and seek to punish the police." Bolsonaro, who was sworn in during a joint session of the Brazilian Congress, called on the country's lawmakers to assist him in rooting out corruption, crime, and economic inefficiency. The new President also promised to open foreign markets to Brazil and implement economic reforms to reduce the country's budget deficit. Reuters reports that Bolsonaro aims to distance Brazil from developing countries and bring it closer to Western countries, especially the United States. Donald Trump, the President of the United States, previously congratulated Jair Bolsonaro on his victory, and Mike Pompeo, the U.S. Secretary of State, also traveled to Brazil to attend Bolsonaro's inauguration. One of Bolsonaro's significant international actions is his plan to transfer the Brazilian embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, which can be seen as a departure from Brazil's traditional position regarding the Middle East peace plan for the establishment of two states.
