New Case Filed Against Spokesperson of the Teachers' Trade Union of Tehran

The Coordination Council of Iranian Teachers' Trade Unions announced the formation of a new case against Mohammad Habibi, the spokesperson for the Teachers' Trade Union of Tehran, and the issuance of an indictment against him. The council stated that this labor activist will be tried on January 10 in the second branch of the Revolutionary Court in Shahriar on charges of 'gathering and collusion.' On October 23, the council had also reported that 'for the third time, Habibi is facing a buyout and dismissal order, which permanently deprives him of the opportunity to work as a teacher.' According to this report, this teachers' labor activist had also been dismissed from the Ministry of Education in 2020 and 2021. Habibi had temporarily returned to work after protesting against the ruling of the Administrative Justice Court, but with the new ruling from the Ministry of Education's Disciplinary Board and its confirmation by the Administrative Justice Court, he was dismissed from the Ministry of Education. On April 5, Habibi was arrested by the forces of the Islamic Republic's Ministry of Intelligence at his teaching location in Shahriar and was temporarily released from Evin Prison on Sunday, May 21, after posting bail. This civil activist has protested against the ongoing trend of 'monetizing' and 'commodifying education' in Iran, which he claims contradicts the principle of providing free education and Article 30 of the Islamic Republic's Constitution. He has been arrested multiple times in recent years. He was also arrested once again in March 2018 in front of his school but was released from prison in November 2020. After his release, Mohammad Habibi continued his activities until he was arrested again on April 29, 2022, and sent to prison. Habibi, a prominent figure in the Iranian teachers' movement, was released from prison on February 7, 2023, after enduring 10 months of imprisonment.
