New Case Filed Against Zia Nabavi for Reporting on 'Sas' in Evin Prison

Human rights sources have reported the formation of a new case against Zia Nabavi, a jailed student activist, due to his protest against 'Sas' in Evin Prison. The legal consulting website 'Dadban' reported on Thursday, July 21, that the branch of the judicial authority overseeing security prisoners (political and ideological) in Evin Prison, Tehran, has accused Zia Nabavi of 'spreading falsehoods' in a new case. This political prisoner spent some time in a 'punitive solitary confinement' following his reporting on 'Sas' in Ward 8 of Evin Prison, which was published in a protest letter earlier this year. While the 'Mizan' news agency, affiliated with the judiciary, dismissed this news as 'false claims', human rights activists reported that after Zia Nabavi's disclosure, Evin Prison officials began collecting money from prisoners for poison and equipment related to 'Sas'. Furthermore, it has been noted that there is discrimination between 'insiders and outsiders' in Evin; government-affiliated prisoners have 'special facilities'. Mr. Nabavi, who was accused of 'propaganda against the regime' following protests against the serial poisoning of students in 2022, was transferred to Evin Prison on April 7 to serve a one-year sentence. This student and human rights activist has been arrested and imprisoned multiple times due to his activities. Iranian officials consistently resort to punitive measures against protesting prisoners and their disclosures about prison conditions, including forming new cases, issuing additional prison sentences, transferring to solitary confinement, and depriving them of phone contact and family visits. In the latest example of these retaliatory actions, Zartosht Ahmadi Raghb, a civil activist imprisoned in Qezel Hesar Prison, was sentenced to one year in prison and two years of exile to 'Qidar' County in Zanjan Province for reporting on the transfer of 16 political prisoners from Evin Prison to Qezel Hesar last summer. Prisoners held in Qezel Hesar Prison in Karaj are deprived of access to clean water.
