New Court Case for Narges Mohammadi on Charges of 'Propaganda Against the Regime' to be Held

Narges Mohammadi, the Nobel Peace Prize winner currently imprisoned in Evin Prison, has been charged in a new case with 'propaganda against the regime,' and her court session will take place. Mustafa Nili, Ms. Mohammadi's lawyer, announced this news on Friday, May 17, on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), stating: 'The hearing for Ms. Narges Mohammadi's new case will be held on Sunday, May 19, in Branch 29 of the Islamic Revolutionary Court in Tehran.' Previously, this human rights activist and political prisoner has been convicted in several cases initiated by the judiciary of the Islamic Republic. She was re-arrested on April 12, 2022, when security forces raided her home, and she is currently imprisoned in Evin. During this time, Narges Mohammadi has frequently sent messages from inside the prison and has even conducted secret interviews with foreign media. Most recently, in late January of last year, due to her activities inside the prison and after being announced as a Nobel Peace Prize winner, she was sentenced by the Revolutionary Court to 'fifteen months in prison, two years of exile outside Tehran and neighboring provinces, two years of travel ban, two years of prohibition from membership in social-political groups, and two years of prohibition from using a smartphone.' In total, Narges Mohammadi has been sentenced to '12 years and 3 months in prison, 154 lashes, 4 months of community service, and 2 years of travel ban and exile' along with other political and social deprivations by the Iranian judiciary in five separate convictions. Over the past fourteen years, she has spent ten years in prison and was introduced as the Nobel Peace Prize winner in December of last year. This award was presented to her children as her representatives in her absence.
