New Details on Efforts to Lift Reza Zarrab's Detention in the U.S.

Following the addition of Rudolph Giuliani and Michael Mukasey, two prominent American politicians and lawyers, to Reza Zarrab's defense team, the New York federal prosecutor's office has disclosed more details about their diplomatic and political activities aimed at preventing Zarrab's legal prosecution. Reza Zarrab, a well-known Iranian-Turkish businessman, is imprisoned in New York on charges of circumventing U.S. sanctions against Iran. Additionally, Zarrab's name has been linked to the case of Babak Zanjani, the Amine Erdogan Foundation, the wife of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and a major corruption case in Turkey. Zarrab has denied the charges against him. Erdogan has previously condemned Zarrab's detention in the U.S. publicly. According to the New York Times, Zarrab's case has now become one of the issues affecting U.S.-Turkey relations. On Friday, the Manhattan District Attorney's office confirmed in a letter to Judge Richard Berman, who is overseeing Zarrab's case, that Giuliani had informed Jeff Sessions, the U.S. Attorney General, about his travel plans to Turkey. Giuliani and Mukasey reportedly traveled to Ankara after March 6 to discuss Zarrab's case and how to end his legal prosecution with President Erdogan. The New York prosecutor's office also stated that Giuliani and Mukasey attempted to contact U.S. officials to discuss Zarrab's case. According to John Kim, the acting prosecutor in New York, the goal of Giuliani and Mukasey's efforts is to resolve this case. Rudolph Giuliani, the former mayor of New York and a close Republican ally of Donald Trump, and Michael Mukasey, who served as U.S. Attorney General during George W. Bush's presidency, joined Zarrab's defense team last week, as reported by the New York Times. These two well-known legal figures in the U.S. are handling a case that relates to circumventing sanctions on Iran during Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's presidency and is also considered a significant issue in U.S.-Turkey relations. The arrest of Mehmet Hakan Atilla, the deputy CEO of Turkey's Halkbank in the U.S., which is related to Zarrab's case, has further heightened tensions between Washington and Ankara. Atilla was arrested last Tuesday, April 8, at New York's John F. Kennedy Airport and was detained after appearing in court and being informed of the charges. Atilla has been accused of collaborating with Zarrab to circumvent U.S. sanctions on Iran. The New York prosecutor's office claims that Atilla, from 2010 to 2015, conspired with Zarrab to transfer hundreds of millions of dollars in gold and currency to Iran through Halkbank, using forged documents. According to the New York prosecutor's office, Zarrab and Atilla deceived American banks by establishing shell companies and creating fake invoices, pretending that the bank transfers were related to food products, which were not subject to U.S. sanctions against Iran. Zarrab was previously arrested in 2013 on charges of bribing the children of several Turkish government ministers in exchange for their assistance in his economic and business activities, but he was released after a few months. At that time, Turkish media reported that during Ahmadinejad's presidency and the imposition of international sanctions against Iran, Zarrab helped facilitate currency and gold transfers to the Iranian government. Last spring, during a vacation trip to Miami, Florida, Zarrab was arrested again and transferred to a prison in New York. One of the charges against Zarrab in the U.S. is deceiving American financial institutions and banks to circumvent U.S. sanctions on Iran. The U.S. federal prosecutor's office in New York has also charged Zarrab with money laundering, bank fraud, and forgery. Zarrab's trial, which was supposed to begin earlier this year in New York, has been postponed to October, about six months later.
