U.S. judicial authorities have accused Maria Butina of attempting to infiltrate political circles in the United States and offering sexual favors in exchange for a job within a lobbying group. Maria Butina, a 29-year-old Russian woman currently in custody, is charged with conducting a 'secret mission' for the Russian government and conspiring against the U.S. According to the indictment released against her on July 18, she had a relationship with an American citizen for her infiltration operations and was living with him. Although the indictment does not name this American citizen, some media outlets suggest he is a political activist with close ties to pro-gun groups. The indictment further states that Maria Butina, in addition to her relationship with this American citizen referred to as Citizen Number 1, offered sexual favors to another individual in exchange for a job in a lobbying group. The indictment also reveals that letters obtained from Maria Butina show she complained about her shared life with Citizen Number 1. Maria Butina appeared in a federal court in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, where the judge issued a detention order for her. She has denied the charges of 'conspiracy against the U.S. government and failing to register as a foreign agent,' but the judge stated that due to the risk of flight, she must remain in jail. Federal prosecutors say security forces arrested Maria Butina on July 15 after they learned she was planning to leave the area and the country. If the charges against Ms. Butina are proven in court, she could face up to 10 years in prison. Currently, there are no charges against her for membership in Russian intelligence or espionage organizations or for 'sabotage.' U.S. media reports that she worked for Alexander Torshin, the deputy governor of the Russian central bank. Mr. Torshin has not commented on this matter. The lawyer for this Russian citizen claims she is not a Russian government agent. The Russian news agency Interfax quotes Andrei Kolyadin, a 'political expert,' stating that during her attendance at the 'National Prayer Breakfast,' Maria Butina acted as his translator. The 'National Prayer Breakfast' is an annual event held in Washington where senior officials, including the President, deliver speeches, and meetings and discussions occur among participants. The event mentioned by Andrei Kolyadin was attended by Donald Trump.
