New Position of the Islamic Republic on 'Agreement with the U.S.' from Ali Larijani

Ali Larijani, advisor to the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic and a member of the Expediency Discernment Council, announced the Islamic Republic's readiness to negotiate with the future government of the United States and reach a new agreement regarding the nuclear program. In an interview published by a news agency close to the Supreme Leader on Friday, December 2, he emphasized that new talks with the U.S. and the West could be presented as an acceptable option. In a post on X, he also outlined the Islamic Republic's conditions for a new agreement, which include 'compensation for damages caused by the U.S. withdrawal from the JCPOA, recognition of Iran's enrichment to a level above 60 percent, and an end to unilateral decisions against Iran's nuclear program.' These statements come at a time when Ali Khamenei had previously rejected any changes to the JCPOA provisions or renegotiation with the U.S. Khamenei had stated in 2016, in response to Donald Trump's threat to 'tear up the JCPOA,' that 'if you tear up the JCPOA, we will burn it!' On Thursday, Britain, France, and Germany issued a joint statement to the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency, calling Iran's nuclear behavior 'a threat to international security' and demanding an end to the Islamic Republic's threats regarding the production of nuclear weapons. The three countries, known as the 'European Troika,' expressed regret that the Agency's findings are once again 'very concerning.' The European Troika noted the increase in uranium reserves enriched to 60 percent by the Islamic Republic and reminded that, according to the Agency's assessments, the possibility of building a nuclear bomb with this amount of uranium cannot be dismissed. This resolution comes on the eve of the official end of the 2015 agreement and in the shadow of the Trump administration's stringent policies against the Islamic Republic. Previously, a U.S. State Department spokesperson had also announced that Washington, in full coordination with its European partners, supports efforts to hold Iran accountable for its lack of cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
