New Tariffs on Chinese Imports Implemented; China Responds

Reuters reported that the Chinese Ministry of Finance on Tuesday imposed a package of tariffs on a wide range of American products in response to the 10% tariff announced by Donald Trump, the President of the United States, on Chinese imports. This decision by Trump went into effect this morning. The White House announced last Saturday that Donald Trump had imposed heavy tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China, while a lower tariff was set for energy imports from Canada. According to this decision, imports from Canada and Mexico would face a 25% tariff, while energy resources from Canada would be subject to a 10% tariff. The White House also stated that imported goods from China would be subject to a 10% tariff. Previously, Reuters had reported, citing a Chinese embassy official in Washington, that the trade war between Washington and Beijing has no winners and is not in the interest of either country. The additional 10% tariff on all Chinese imports to the United States was implemented at 12:01 AM Eastern Time on Tuesday. Within minutes, the Chinese Ministry of Finance announced that it would impose a 15% tariff on American coal and LNG (liquefied natural gas) and a 10% tariff on crude oil, agricultural equipment, and some vehicles. The ministry stated that the new tariffs on U.S. exports would begin on February 10. According to Reuters, separately, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce and its customs administration also stated that the country is applying export controls on "tungsten, tellurium, ruthenium, molybdenum, and items related to ruthenium" for "protecting national security interests." Trump had previously warned that he might increase tariffs on China further unless Beijing stops the flow of fentanyl, a deadly opioid, into the United States. The imposition of these tariffs led to a preliminary new agreement between the U.S. and Canada and Mexico, after which Trump postponed the imposition of new tariffs for 30 days to finalize a new agreement with these two neighbors. On Monday, February 15, Trump stated, "Canada has agreed to secure our northern border and take action to end the deadly threat of drugs like fentanyl, which has entered our country and killed hundreds of thousands of Americans, destroying families and communities across our nation." He said Canada would implement its $1.3 billion border plan, and as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced, the country will enhance border security using new helicopters, technology, and more personnel, increasing cooperation with American partners and securing more resources to stop the flow of fentanyl. Trump also mentioned that Canada and the U.S. would establish a joint task force to combat organized crime, fentanyl, and money laundering. He stated that a new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl has been issued and funded with $200 million. According to Trump, Canada is deploying nearly 10,000 personnel for border protection. He emphasized that as President, his responsibility is to ensure the security of all Americans, and "I am doing exactly that." Trump expressed satisfaction with Canada's initial decision on his social media platform, stating that the tariffs announced on Saturday would be suspended for a 30-day period to see if a final economic agreement could be reached with Canada. The U.S. President concluded that the agreement must be fair for all. He had previously criticized the U.S. trade deficit and the prevention of certain American services and goods from entering Canada. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also announced this agreement on social media. Earlier on Monday, Trump had announced that the imposition of new tariffs on imported goods from Mexico would be suspended for a month following that country's agreement to deploy "immediate" 10,000 soldiers along the shared border. The U.S. President stated on his social media platform, "Truth Social," that in a "very friendly" conversation with his Mexican counterpart, Claudia Sheinbaum, they agreed to the "immediate" deployment of these soldiers at the border. The Trump administration has accused Canada and Mexico of not taking action to combat the illegal crossing of migrants from those two countries into the U.S. Combating drug trafficking has been one of the main demands of the U.S. President.
