New Tool on Facebook for Ending Relationships

In the film 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind', former lovers undergo medical treatments to erase memories of each other. When the film was made in 2004, Facebook had not yet been born. However, now this social media platform encompasses a significant part of people's emotional lives. Lovers share their relationship status and numerous photos of their shared moments on Facebook with friends and relatives. But what happens when a relationship ends? If individuals do not want to remove each other from their friends list or block each other, they will still be confronted with updates about each other's status, reminders of shared memories, and photos. However, Facebook announced on Thursday that it has thought of a solution for these heartbroken lovers. According to the New York Times, this new option will remove shared memories from your Facebook wall and will often not display updates from the person you wish to forget. The end of a long relationship means sifting through a massive amount of photos, messages, status updates, and comments. Facebook's algorithms work in such a way that the more you interact with someone from your friends list, the more updates you will see from them; therefore, the likelihood of seeing updates from the person you have ended your relationship with is high. By activating Facebook's new option, not only will updates related to your ex-partner not appear on your wall, but you will also have the ability to remove their tag from all shared photos at once. You will also be able to keep all your new posts hidden from your ex, and they will not be aware of any of these actions. This new option is currently only available in the United States and on the Facebook mobile app. Facebook has stated that 'final changes will be determined and implemented based on initial user feedback.' Kelly Winter, one of Facebook's product managers, says, 'We hope this tool allows individuals to end their relationship on Facebook more easily and with a greater sense of control.' This new tool is offered to those who activate and announce the end of a relationship with a specific individual on Facebook; therefore, individuals must first declare the end of their relationship on Facebook.
