New UK Sanctions Against Seven Individuals and Two Entities Linked to the Iranian Government

On Monday, October 15, the UK imposed new sanctions on seven individuals and two entities affiliated with the Iranian government in response to the continued "dangerous and destabilizing activities" of Iran in the Middle East. According to a statement from the UK government, these sanctions were implemented following the Islamic Republic's missile attack on Israel on October 1, and include senior figures from the army, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and two organizations linked to the government's ballistic and cruise missile programs. David Lammy, the UK Foreign Secretary, noted the ongoing provocative actions of the Islamic Republic and its proxy groups despite repeated warnings from the international community, stating: "Following the [Islamic Republic's] ballistic missile attack on Israel, we are holding [the Iranian government] accountable and exposing the facilitators of these actions." The senior British diplomat emphasized that the UK and its partners will continue to take necessary actions to counter the unacceptable threats posed by the Islamic Republic and will persist in efforts to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East. The sanctioned individuals include: Abdolrahim Mousavi: Chief Commander of the Army and member of the Supreme National Security Council; Mohammad Hossein Dadras: Deputy Chief Commander of the Army; Hamid Vahedi: Commander of the Air Force; Mohammad Kazemi: Head of the IRGC Intelligence Organization; Habibollah Sayyari: Chief of the General Staff of the Army; Ali Mohammad Naeini: Spokesman for the IRGC; Hossein Pourfarzaneh: Senior Engineer at the Farzanegan Propulsion System Design Office. The sanctioned organizations are: Farzanegan Propulsion System Design Office: This organization is involved in the design and production of technology for engines used in cruise missiles; Iranian Space Organization: This organization is active in developing launch technologies applicable to ballistic missile development. At the same time, the European Union also imposed sanctions against the Deputy Minister of Defense of the Islamic Republic of Iran, senior members of the IRGC, and three airlines accused of sending drones, missiles, and other equipment to Russia for use in the war against Ukraine. Additionally, human rights violations and the suppression of Iranian protesters, increasing military cooperation with Russia, financial and military support for terrorist groups in the Middle East, and the nuclear and missile programs of the Islamic Republic have led the US, UK, and EU to impose extensive sanctions against this government. In response to the Islamic Republic's missile attack on Israel, the US has imposed new sanctions on Iran's oil and petrochemical industries. The EU is sanctioning individuals and entities related to the transfer of ballistic missiles from the Islamic Republic to Russia. New sanctions against agents of the Islamic Republic are also being imposed due to "interfering in elections" and "targeting officials" in the US. The US has sanctioned several companies and vessels for participating in the transfer of Iranian oil and gas. The US has also imposed new human rights sanctions against institutions and officials of the Islamic Republic.
