New US Intelligence Report on the Origin of COVID-19; Laboratory Leak Hypothesis Not Yet Ruled Out

A report released on Friday, June 22, indicates that US intelligence agencies have not found conclusive evidence that the COVID-19 pandemic originated from an incident at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China. The report from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence states that the intelligence community still cannot dismiss the possibility that the virus came from a laboratory, but has been unable to determine the virus's origin. The report notes that both hypotheses (natural spillover and laboratory leak) rely on major assumptions or face challenges due to conflicting reports. It states that while the Wuhan Institute has conducted 'extensive work' on coronaviruses, intelligence agencies have not found evidence that a specific incident caused the outbreak. The report emphasizes that most US intelligence agencies agree that the virus was not engineered in a laboratory. Since the first cases were reported in Wuhan in late 2019, the origin of the coronavirus pandemic has become a contentious topic in US politics. President Joe Biden signed a bill in March to declassify information related to the pandemic's origins. In February, the Wall Street Journal reported that the US Department of Energy assessed in classified information with 'low confidence' that COVID-19 likely resulted from a laboratory leak in China, a claim Beijing denies. Christopher Wray, the FBI director, stated on February 28 that the agency had concluded for some time that the pandemic's origin was 'most likely' a laboratory incident in Wuhan. Four other US government agencies still believe that the COVID-19 pandemic likely resulted from natural transmission from animals to humans. In 2021, the World Health Organization, after a visit by a group of its scientists to Wuhan, stated that all hypotheses remain on the table but considered the laboratory leak theory to be 'the most likely' and stated that a leak from the Wuhan Institute of Virology was 'very unlikely.' This led to criticism of the international body, with some accusing it of bias and supporting China's claims. Dr. Robert Gray, a virologist at Tulane University in New Orleans who has sequenced the coronavirus, was one of those approached by the US intelligence team for investigations. Dr. Gray explained in an interview with Voice of America that the virus may have inadvertently entered the community from a laboratory, but since the initial cases trace back to a fresh meat market, it seems unlikely that someone from the laboratory visited several markets and introduced the virus in this way.
