New US Resolution Regarding Iraq After War - 2003-09-29

Colin Powell, the US Secretary of State, stated that a new solution regarding military assistance from supporting countries will be submitted to the United Nations within the next two days. However, he expressed doubts about whether foreign allied countries would be willing to provide extraordinary assistance. On Sunday, Mr. Powell, during his remarks on the ABC program 'This Week', mentioned that only a limited number of countries are volunteering to participate in the security and reconstruction of Iraq. He added that discussions have been held with Turkey, Pakistan, and South Korea regarding their potential cooperation in relation to Iraq. Meanwhile, on Sunday, Dominique de Villepin, the French Foreign Minister, stated that his government wishes to review the draft of the proposed solution before making any decisions. Mr. de Villepin expressed hope that the proposed solution would enable global communities to rebuild Iraq. He noted that the issue of transferring power to the Iraqi people as quickly as possible will significantly influence the final vote of the French government. The date for the final vote by the United Nations regarding the proposed solution has yet to be determined.
