New Year Messages from the President and Secretary of State of the United States

The President and Secretary of State of the United States have released New Year messages on the occasion of Nowruz and the New Year. Donald Trump, the President of the United States, in his Nowruz message published on the White House website, congratulated the arrival of the New Year and Nowruz, expressing solidarity with Iranians. He stated that Iranians "like every other year in the past four decades, are experiencing the arrival of spring under the oppression of their corrupt and ruthless government." Mr. Trump further added that the people of Iran seek to revive their "glorious history, rich culture, and true place in the global arena": "It is their right to have a government that is accountable and respects their dignity and honor." In the continuation of the U.S. President's Nowruz message, it is stated that the Iranian government does not adhere to these principles: "As a result, the daily lives of the people of Iran, unfortunately, flow contrary to the true meaning of Nowruz, which in Persian means 'new day' and embodies hope for a day when goodness triumphs over evil, and joy over sorrow." Donald Trump continued to express solidarity with the people of Iran, stating that the United States will continue to condemn the "dictatorial government" of Iran. At the end of the Nowruz message, Mr. Trump said he "prays for the rebirth of freedom in Iran": "Ultimately, freedom and justice will triumph over oppression." Mike Pompeo, the U.S. Secretary of State, has also released a Nowruz message. Mr. Pompeo's Twitter account published a short video in which the Secretary of State reads his Nowruz message. In his Nowruz message, Mike Pompeo said, "On behalf of the American people, I extend my warmest wishes to all those who celebrate Nowruz, whether in the United States, Iran, or around the world." The U.S. Secretary of State expressed hope that the New Year would be "full of renewal, health, and prosperity." He then said in Persian, "Nowruz Mobarak."
