New York Times: Elon Musk Met with Iranian Representative at the United Nations

The New York Times reports that Elon Musk, a close associate of Donald Trump, met with the Iranian ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeed Iravani, on Monday in New York. As of the time of this report, Voice of America has not been able to independently confirm or deny this report. The American newspaper, in an article by Farnaz Fasihi, cited two Iranian officials stating that the meeting aimed to explore ways to reduce tensions between the Islamic Republic and the United States. According to these Iranian officials, who wished to remain anonymous, the meeting lasted over an hour and took place in a confidential location. They described the session as 'positive' and 'good news.' According to the report, Steven Chung, Trump's communications director, declined to comment on the meeting when asked, stating, 'We do not comment on reports regarding private meetings that may or may not have occurred.' Elon Musk also did not respond to the New York Times' request for comment. Caroline Levitt, a spokesperson for the transitional government of Trump-Vance, stated, 'The American people re-elected President Trump because they trust him to lead our country and restore peace to the world using power. When he returns to the White House, he will take the necessary actions to achieve this goal.' The New York Times reported that two Iranian officials said the meeting between Iravani and Musk allowed the Islamic Republic to find a way to negotiate without direct talks with an official American representative. Elon Musk is expected to soon play an official role in the Trump administration, having been introduced as the co-director of a new government organization aimed at increasing federal efficiency. An Iranian Foreign Ministry official stated that Iravani proposed to Musk to receive exemptions from U.S. Treasury sanctions and bring some of his businesses to Tehran. The Iranian mission to the United Nations announced that it would not publicly comment on this meeting. Elon Musk owns several major companies, including the social media platform 'X.'
