Nikki Haley, U.S. Presidential Candidate, Calls for Tougher Stance Against the Islamic Republic

Nikki Haley, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and one of the candidates for the Republican nomination in the 2024 U.S. presidential election, called for a firmer approach towards the Iranian government. In the fourth Republican debate held on Wednesday, she stated that the U.S. should respond to the Islamic Republic more aggressively than the Biden administration, saying, 'We must hit them hard with a strong fist.' This was part of Haley's response to a question regarding a Wall Street Journal report about the Iranian security officials' assistance in planning Hamas's surprise attack on Israel on October 7. She mentioned that during her time at the UN, she dealt with Iran daily and knows that the Iranian officials only understand the language of force, and when the pressure of sanctions eases, they go their own way. Previously, in the third Republican debate, Haley had stated that Israel should destroy Hamas. She said, 'We need to understand that without the Islamic Republic, Hamas would not exist; without Iran, Hezbollah would not exist; without Iran, the Houthis would not exist, and if there was no support from the Islamic Republic, there would be no Iranian militias in Syria and Iraq attacking our male and female soldiers.' In the last debate of 2023 for the Republican nomination for next year's election, only four candidates were qualified to participate: Vivek Ramaswamy, Nikki Haley, Ron DeSantis, and Chris Christie. They tried to distinguish themselves from Donald Trump, the leading Republican candidate, although Trump, the former U.S. president, did not participate in any of the four debates held so far. Republicans expressed support for Israel during the debate; Nikki Haley stated: 'Without Iran, Hamas would not exist.'
