Nobel Peace Prize Awarded to the Hibakusha Movement of Atomic Bomb Survivors in Hiroshima and Nagasaki

The Japanese organization "Nihon Hidankyo", the movement of atomic bomb survivors in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, known as "Hibakusha", was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday, October 20. According to Reuters, the Norwegian Nobel Committee wrote on social media platform X: "Hibakusha receives the peace prize for its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through the testimony of witnesses that nuclear weapons should never be used again." The committee also stated: One day, the survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki will no longer be among us as witnesses of history. However, with a strong culture of remembrance and ongoing commitment, new generations in Japan will carry the experiences and messages of the witnesses. According to the Nobel Committee, they inspire people around the world. Meanwhile, the "Narges Mohammadi Foundation", a human rights activist imprisoned and the winner of last year's Nobel Peace Prize, congratulated the Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo on receiving the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize, stating: "The path to peace does not pass through the dark and destructive corridor of war." This foundation noted that the efforts of this NGO are "hopeful for us" and wrote: "The movement of atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, known as 'Hibakusha', received the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating this truth through eyewitness testimony that nuclear weapons should never be used again."
