North Korea Fires Missiles Amid Joint US-South Korea Military Exercises

Reuters reported that North Korea fired several ballistic missiles on Monday, just hours after South Korean and US military forces conducted exercises that Pyongyang described as "provocative and dangerous," claiming that such actions could inadvertently lead to conflict. The South Korean military stated that the missiles were launched from western North Korea towards the Yellow Sea. This is the first reported ballistic missile test by North Korea since the inauguration of US President Donald Trump in January. The annual joint military exercise between the US and South Korea, titled "Freedom Shield," is set to continue until March 20, although some training was suspended after South Korean fighter jets mistakenly dropped bombs on a civilian town, injuring 29 people. North Korea typically calls for the cancellation of US-South Korea joint exercises, viewing them as a precursor to invasion. The South Korean military emphasized that these joint drills are aimed at strengthening the coalition's readiness against threats like North Korea. The North Korean Foreign Ministry, in a statement released by the country's state media, declared: "This is a dangerous provocative act that has pushed the acute situation on the Korean Peninsula to a critical point and could even lead to physical conflict between the two sides with a single accidental shot." The ministry also claimed that these exercises threaten the security of the United States. Lee Yong-soo, the commander of the South Korean Air Force, apologized on Monday for the "unprecedented" incident last week in which two fighter jets mistakenly bombed a village. He told reporters, "This was an incident that should never have happened and must not be repeated." A South Korean military official explained that, according to initial investigation results, one pilot did not recheck the target coordinates due to time constraints, and the other pilot dropped bombs without realizing the incorrect coordinates. According to Reuters, the South Korean Ministry of Defense has not yet commented on the matter. The area affected by the mistaken bombing is in Pocheon, about 40 kilometers northeast of Seoul, and outside the training range near the border with North Korea.
