North Korea Fires Several Short-Range Missiles

Reports indicate that hours after the UN Security Council issued a resolution against North Korea, the country fired several short-range missiles into the sea. According to the Associated Press, the spokesperson for the South Korean Ministry of Defense announced that these missiles were launched early Thursday morning, March 3. Moon Sang-gyun, the spokesperson for the South Korean Ministry of Defense, stated that the missiles were launched from the city of Wonsan, located in eastern North Korea. He emphasized that efforts to identify the type of missiles fired are ongoing. The UN Security Council unanimously adopted a new resolution on Wednesday, New York time, to expand sanctions against Pyongyang in response to North Korea's nuclear test. The Associated Press reports that these sanctions are the most severe punitive measures taken against North Korea in the past two decades. Meanwhile, the South Korean parliament also approved its first resolution regarding the human rights situation in North Korea on Wednesday, with 212 members voting in favor. North Korea has been sanctioned by the UN since 2006 due to four nuclear tests and several missile tests. The new Security Council resolution is a reaction to North Korea's latest nuclear test in January and the missile launch that occurred on February 7. The UN Secretary-General, the United States, and the European Union welcomed the Security Council's sanctions resolution against North Korea. Ban Ki-moon, the UN Secretary-General, stated in a statement that North Korea must fulfill all its international obligations. Meanwhile, Samantha Power, the U.S. representative to the UN, said that the new Security Council resolution against North Korea goes beyond any sanctions imposed on a government in the past two decades, aiming to cut off funding sources for its nuclear programs and other prohibited military activities. According to the new sanctions, all shipments sent to North Korea must be inspected, and North Korean commercial representatives in countries such as Syria, Iran, and Vietnam are among sixteen individuals added to the UN sanctions blacklist, alongside twelve companies and institutions.
