North Korea 'has expressed readiness to negotiate on nuclear disarmament'

U.S. officials have told news outlets that during secret contacts and discussions between North Korean and American officials, Pyongyang has 'expressed readiness to negotiate' on nuclear disarmament. Reuters quotes a U.S. official stating that the two countries have had confidential communications in which North Korea has shown willingness to discuss nuclear disarmament. Similar reports have been published by CNN, Fox News, the Washington Post, and several other U.S. media outlets. The focus of negotiations on the Korean Peninsula is nuclear disarmament, and North Korea's readiness for potential discussions on this matter could indicate its seriousness in upcoming meetings with Seoul officials and a possible meeting between Kim Jong-un, the leader of North Korea, and Donald Trump, the President of the United States. However, U.S. officials have emphasized that the contacts are currently at a preliminary level: 'U.S. State Department officials have communicated with Pyongyang through the North Korean delegation at the United Nations. Security officials have also had other communications with each other.' Following the public invitation from Kim Jong-un to Donald Trump for a meeting, and Trump's acceptance of this invitation, it was reported that the two sides would talk at the end of May. In recent months, tensions and crises on the Korean Peninsula have escalated significantly. North Korea conducted several missile tests that demonstrated significant progress in producing ballistic and intercontinental missiles. Additionally, it has conducted nuclear tests and is reported to have taken many actions to miniaturize nuclear warheads for deployment on ballistic missiles. Meanwhile, UN sanctions have intensified, and the U.S. and its allies have increased the severity of their unilateral and multilateral sanctions against Pyongyang.
