The report only mentioned that Kim visited the nuclear weapons institute and a 'production base for weapon-grade nuclear materials' and called for the 'introduction of a new type of centrifuge' to further strengthen the foundation for producing weapon-grade nuclear materials. According to North Korea's state media, Kim expressed satisfaction with the technical capabilities of the country's nuclear sector during his visit to the claimed enrichment facilities and stressed the need to increase the number of centrifuges for greater production. AFP reported that such facilities produce highly enriched uranium, necessary for creating nuclear warheads, by spinning materials in centrifuges at high speeds. North Korea, which conducted its first nuclear test in 2006 and is under UN sanctions for its prohibited weapons programs, had never publicly disclosed details of its uranium enrichment facilities before. The new images of Kim Jong Un visiting this uranium enrichment center provide a very rare glimpse into the nuclear weapons program of this isolated country. In a recent speech delivered last Monday on the occasion of the 76th anniversary of North Korea's founding, Kim committed to 'exponentially' expanding the country's nuclear arsenal and reiterated hostile rhetoric he had used in the past. Park Won-gon, a professor of North Korean studies, told the Associated Press that the timing of this disclosure is also significant, as North Korean officials are sending the message that the world must recognize Pyongyang as a nuclear state by showcasing uranium and enrichment facilities, and that Kim Jong Un is essentially stating that the denuclearization of North Korea is unrealistic. This revelation comes amid heightened tensions between North Korea and the West; the U.S. and its allies accuse North Korea of providing significant military assistance to Russia's war efforts in Ukraine. However, both Moscow and Pyongyang have denied exporting North Korean weapons despite substantial evidence of such transfers.
