North Korea Tests Medium-Range Missile; United States, Japan, and South Korea Criticize

On Tuesday, April 2, North Korea launched a medium-range missile towards its eastern coast, which was met with swift and negative reactions from South Korea, Japan, and the United States. The South Korean military reported that around 7 AM on Tuesday, a medium-range ballistic missile was detected, launched from an area in Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea. South Korea stated that the missile traveled a distance of 600 kilometers before falling into the water, while Japan's Ministry of Defense reported the distance as 650 kilometers. The South Korean military did not specify the exact type of missile or its payload, but reports suggest that North Korea was testing a medium-range hypersonic missile with a solid-fuel engine. Less than a month ago, North Korean state media announced that Kim Jong-un, the country's leader, had overseen the testing of a solid-fuel engine for a new type of medium-range hypersonic missile, aimed at enhancing North Korea's national defense capabilities. Fumio Kishida, the Prime Minister of Japan, condemned the missile test as detrimental to peace and stability in the region and the world. The U.S. Indo-Pacific Command also stated that while the test posed no immediate threat to U.S. forces and allies, it was condemned as an illegal and destabilizing act. Additionally, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol suggested that North Korea might be trying to create confusion ahead of upcoming parliamentary elections in South Korea. Nonetheless, he emphasized that any attempts in this regard would be futile and that any aggression would be met with a decisive response. According to Reuters, amid concerns over increased cooperation between Russia and North Korea, the United States, South Korea, and Japan are expanding their security cooperation. In this context, aircraft from the three countries conducted a joint air drill on Tuesday, which included the participation of a U.S. B-52 strategic bomber to enhance deterrence against North Korean missile and nuclear threats. Officials from the United States, South Korea, and Ukraine have accused North Korea of providing military assistance to Russia, although Russian and Pyongyang officials have denied these allegations. The South Korean Foreign Ministry imposed sanctions on two Russian ships believed to have transported military equipment and munitions between North Korea and Russia, as well as two Russian organizations believed to have hired North Korean workers to help earn foreign currency. Japanese media also reported that the U.S. government is planning a meeting between President Joe Biden and his Japanese and South Korean counterparts on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Washington in July. U.S. officials have warned about the formation of a 'new axis of evil' consisting of China, Russia, the Islamic Republic, and North Korea.
