North Korea Warns the U.S. Following the Arrival of the USS Carl Vinson in the Region

On Tuesday, coinciding with the arrival of the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier in South Korea's maritime territory, North Korea threatened that if this ship violates the territorial integrity and dignity of the country during joint maneuvers with South Korea, it would launch a "ruthless" attack on the U.S. According to Reuters, F-18 fighter jets took off from the deck of this nuclear aircraft carrier, showcasing U.S. combat power in the region, which has been highly tense due to North Korea's recent nuclear and missile tests, raising concerns among regional countries. Captain James W. Kilby, one of the commanders of this ship, told Reuters: "Deployment to the region is a routine mission for the USS Carl Vinson's combat units, but an important part of it for us is the joint exercise with South Korean forces called Young Eagle." North Korea claims the entry of the U.S. aircraft carrier into the waters east of the Korean Peninsula is part of a "foolish plan" to attack the country. The state news agency of North Korea stated: "If they violate the territorial integrity and dignity of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea even slightly, our army will commence its very precise attacks from land, air, sea, and underwater." The North Korean state news agency added: "Only on March 11, many enemy aircraft carriers conducted bombing exercises and surprise attacks on land near the air and maritime borders of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea." Last week, in response to the annual military exercises of the U.S. and South Korea, which are considered a direct threat by North Korea, four ballistic missiles were fired towards the Sea of Japan. U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is scheduled to visit South Korea for the first time on Friday. Last week, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations stated that the Trump administration is reviewing its policy regarding North Korea and will "consider all options." China opposes the deployment of the advanced THAAD missile defense system in South Korea, which has somewhat increased tensions in the region. Washington and Seoul say the purpose of deploying this system is to counter North Korean threats. However, Beijing is concerned that the powerful radar of this system could also monitor its territory. The U.S. began the process of deploying this missile defense system last week, one day after North Korea's missile tests. The joint military exercise of South Korean and U.S. forces, which is presented as a defensive maneuver, began on March 1. In a similar exercise last year, 17,000 U.S. troops and over 300,000 South Korean forces participated. South Korean officials state that the scale of this year's exercise will be similar to last year's. A U.S. military spokesperson said on Monday that the country has begun deploying attack drones known as "Gray Eagles" to South Korea. The Chinese government stated that conducting this joint exercise does not help reduce tensions in the region. Last week, it urged North Korea to halt its weapons tests and also called on the U.S. and South Korea not to hold joint military maneuvers. In this context, the deployment of U.S. attack drones in South Korea has been described by China as a "crisis" situation on the Korean Peninsula.
