North Korean Leader Orders Full Military Readiness at Frontline

In the latest round of tensions between the two Koreas, marked by artillery fire from North Korea and reciprocal responses from South Korea, Kim Jong-un, the leader of North Korea, has ordered armed forces at the frontline between the two countries to be on full military readiness. The official North Korean media reported this news on August 30, and the South Korean news agency, Yonhap, also covered it. According to Yonhap, Kim Jong-un met with the military council of the Workers' Party, the ruling party in North Korea, just hours after the exchange of fire between the two Koreas. North Korean state television stated that during this meeting, the North Korean leader asked military commanders to go to the frontline forces and prepare for a military operation. In response, the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff warned North Korea that if there were any further 'provocations' from the North, they would respond severely. North Korea, following tensions that have escalated since early August, and aiming to end what it calls 'propaganda' from South Korean loudspeakers against it, shelled areas in the border regions on Thursday. Previously, two South Korean soldiers were severely injured due to a landmine explosion in the demilitarized zone between the two countries. Seoul has accused Pyongyang of laying landmines in the area. Following North Korea's shelling, the South Korean military responded, stating that they targeted the area from which the shelling originated. Amid the latest round of tensions, Seoul expressed doubts about Pyongyang's seriousness in engaging in negotiations between the two countries. North Korea, while calling for an end to the border loudspeaker propaganda, also stated that it intends to work towards opening a channel that could lead to improved relations. The South Korean Ministry of Unification, which aims for the unification of the Korean Peninsula, stated that such remarks are not credible when Pyongyang orders military readiness. Unlike South Korea, North Korea does not possess advanced military equipment, but it is armed with nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles. The two countries were separated following the civil war in the 1950s, aligned with the West and East. Both Koreas are effectively in a state of military readiness, as peace has not been established between them, and they are only in a state of armistice.
