North Korean Leader: We Have Achieved the Capability to Install Nuclear Warheads on Missiles

The leader of North Korea, in an unusual statement, claims that his country has succeeded in miniaturizing nuclear warheads and preparing them for installation on ballistic missiles. An American military commander states that from their perspective, Pyongyang has not yet reached this capability. The preparation of nuclear weapons for installation on ballistic missiles could significantly alter North Korea's nuclear military capabilities. The official North Korean news agency reported on March 10 that during a meeting between Kim Jong-un and a group of 'nuclear scientists and experts,' the leader stated that lightweight nuclear bombs have been standardized and are now capable of being installed on ballistic missiles. South Korean media indicate that it is rare for the North Korean leader to directly discuss potential advancements in his country's nuclear warhead miniaturization. According to the official South Korean news agency, Yonhap, Mark Welsh, the senior commander of the U.S. Air Force, stated on Tuesday that the United States believes North Korea has not yet achieved this capability. Previously, the U.S. Department of Defense emphasized that North Korea still lacks the necessary capability to mount nuclear warheads on ballistic missiles, and even in that case, American forces are prepared to neutralize potential attacks. South Korea and the U.S. are currently conducting their largest joint military exercise. Nevertheless, the U.S. State Department announced on Monday that it takes North Korea's threats regarding the use of nuclear weapons 'seriously.' On March 8, the North Korean leader threatened a 'preemptive' nuclear attack against the U.S. and South Korea, stating that no exceptions would be made regarding targets. These recent threats and statements come at a time when the U.S. and South Korea are in the midst of their largest joint military exercise to date, involving hundreds of thousands of soldiers, advanced ships, and fighter jets. Analysts quoted by Yonhap suggest that Kim Jong-un's comments about miniaturizing nuclear warheads likely reflect North Korea's anger over the recent exercises. Recently, Japanese media reported that the recent exercises may involve some form of 'decapitation strikes' against North Korea's leadership. The Seoul-based Hangyoreh newspaper states that Pyongyang's strong reaction is likely related to such reports. Last week, the United Nations Security Council imposed extensive sanctions on Pyongyang following North Korea's recent missile and nuclear tests.
