North Korea's New Missile Test Ends in Fire and Crash

A senior U.S. defense official stated that North Korea's missile test on Wednesday, April 5, ended in failure after the missile veered off course, caught fire, and crashed into the ocean. According to the Associated Press, this missile test occurred just before Donald Trump's first meeting with the President of China. The U.S. defense official, who requested anonymity, indicated that based on recorded images and assessments, the North Korean missile, which was an upgraded Scud-type missile, experienced a technical malfunction during flight and fell into waters near North Korea. Initial assessments from the U.S. and South Korea suggested that this missile was of the KN-15 model with a medium range, which had its first recorded test by North Korea in February. However, the U.S. official noted that unlike that model which uses solid fuel, the missile launched on Wednesday, April 5, used liquid fuel and was fired from a fixed platform rather than a mobile one. The South Korean military also reported that this missile was launched from land in the vicinity of Sinpo, located on the eastern coastal strip of North Korea, and flew approximately 60 kilometers. North Korea is making significant efforts to modernize its arsenal in response to what it describes as the threat from the U.S. Many arms experts believe that the country could produce nuclear-capable missiles within the next few years that could target U.S. soil. North Korea conducted two nuclear tests last year. According to the Associated Press, satellite images indicate that the country is preparing for another nuclear test in the near future. North Korean state media also reported that the world will soon witness the country's 'historic success' in space industries. The U.S., South Korea, and others view North Korea's aerospace industries as a cover for its nuclear weapons program. The South Korean Foreign Minister described Wednesday's missile test as 'provocative and irresponsible,' posing a danger to global security and peace. The Deputy Prime Minister of Japan also stated that his country has strongly protested this action. The U.S. Secretary of State briefly mentioned this missile test but added that the U.S. government has already taken sufficient positions on North Korea and will not comment further. The U.S. President has stated that China needs to take more action to pressure North Korea to stop its nuclear and missile tests. A spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that all countries should take action in this regard. He added, 'If we are serious about solving this problem, we must address the root cause. We need to consider everyone's interests. China wants to cooperate with everyone to ensure the dismantling of nuclear weapons and peace in the region.' In this context, North Korea tested another ballistic missile. Trump stated that if China does not cooperate regarding North Korea, the U.S. will take direct action. The United States has sanctioned 11 North Korean nationals and one North Korean company.
