Obama Emphasizes Avoiding Prejudices at White House Iftar

The Facebook page of the U.S. State Department published a part of President Barack Obama's remarks made during the White House iftar on Monday: "When our values are threatened, we come together as a nation. When three young American Muslims were brutally murdered earlier this year in Chapel Hill, Americans of every faith and belief supported that community; and certainly, tonight, our prayers will be with the city of Charleston and Mother Emanuel Church. As Americans, we insist that no one should be targeted because of their appearance, or who they are, or who they love, or how they worship. We stand united against these hateful acts." Mr. Obama had previously released a message on the occasion of the arrival of Ramadan. In this message, he stated, "As the new crescent moon heralds the arrival of the holy month of Ramadan, Michelle and I extend our warmest greetings to all those observing this month in the United States and around the world." The U.S. President also added, "Ramadan is a time when families and communities come together in joyful gatherings that reflect the rich and diverse traditions of Islamic communities and cultures for iftar and prayer." Mr. Obama concluded this message by saying, "I once again look forward to welcoming American Muslims to the annual White House iftar to honor Ramadan and to express gratitude for the contributions of American Muslims across the country. From my family to yours, Ramadan Mubarak."
