Obama Strongly Condemns the Killing of Three Police Officers in Louisiana

Police officials in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA, report that three police officers were killed during a shooting in the area. Barack Obama has called the attack 'cowardly' and condemned it in the strongest terms. In connection with this attack, Obama stated on Sunday that he condemns the killing of police officers in the strongest possible terms and emphasized that attacks on those serving the public must end. Earlier, the White House announced that Obama had been briefed on the situation and requested to be kept regularly updated on the details of the incident. According to a Reuters report, during the shooting on Sunday in Baton Rouge, in addition to the three police officers killed, at least three other officers were injured. The mayor of Baton Rouge told NBC News that police officers had responded to a phone report about the shooting when they were ambushed. Reuters reports that one of the suspects in the attack has been killed, and police are examining the scene using a robot to ensure there are no explosives present. Additionally, according to law enforcement and security officials, the shooting site has been closed to the public. The report cites police officials stating that they are looking for more than one suspect and asking the public to assist in finding armed suspects dressed in black. CNN also reported that authorities believe two other suspects are at large. Baton Rouge had witnessed the killing of an African American citizen two weeks prior, who was shot by police officers. This killing and similar incidents have led to widespread protests in various cities across America regarding certain discriminatory behaviors by the police. According to the Associated Press, the President of the United States has dedicated a significant portion of his time last week to efforts aimed at reducing tensions and helping to rebuild trust between the police and citizens. He participated in a memorial service for five police officers who were killed in Dallas and also spoke by phone with the families of two African American men who were killed in Baton Rouge and St. Paul, Minnesota.
